I am beginning a afghan and making if simple with just the knit stitch. Typically how many inches do you use to cast on. My pattern calls for me to cast on 89 sts.
Every afghan is different. You have to decide what size you want it to be based on your gauge. Do a swatch, determine your gauge (sts/inch) and then CO for the width you want.
