Casting on within a Pattern?

Hello!
I am wanting to start the Wave Hand Warmers pattern in the book One Skein Wonders, but both my mom and I are confused about one part of the pattern.
In the “Forming the Thumb Hole” Section it says to bind off 4 stitches in one row (ok…I get that), and then to cast on 4 stitches in the next row (???).
How do you cast on within a pattern?

Here’s the exact pattern, if that helps:
NEXT ROW: P2, K4, P2, bind off 4, *P2, K4, repeat from *
NEXT ROW: P2, K4, P2, Cast On 4 (???), *P2, K4; repeat from *

There are three easy cast on methods you can use for casting on in the middle of a project. Backward loop, cable cast on and knitted cast on. All three can be found in the video section under cast ons at the tab above. :thumbsup:

Somebody please HELP!!!

I have a pattern that uses 2 different size needles. The smaller ones are for the ribbing, then when you finish that, you knit x number of stitches onto the bigger needles, then cast on x number of stitches after that. I watched the videos over and over and over until I was sure I had it down, and proceeded to do the cast on. It turned out fine, but the stupid cast on stitches ended up on the small needle instead of the bigger one where it was supposed to be. What did I do wrong, and more importantly, how do I correct it?

Without seeing how you did it, it would be hard to say. If you knita few stitches onto the larger one, you should have cast on the stitches to that needle. Transfer it to the left hand, cast on and then go on. Just watch it next time that you cast on to the larger needle.

I knit the 32 stitches from the #6 to the #8…this left the bigger needle in my right hand. But, when you watch the video, the cast on stitches end up on the LEFT needle (apparently I only realized that problem after I’d made the mistake and rewatched it…apparently that only works if both needles are the same size). That’s how the cast on stitches ended up on the opposite needle from my 32 knitted on stitches.

Now, do I undo the cast on stitches and reverse the needle positions, or am I going to end up with the “knitting yarn” in the wrong place by doing that? No joke, my head is swimming at trying to figure out how to correct this. It seems like it should be fairly simple…just go back to where I messed up the first time…but my mind is playing with me and making me think I’ll have other issues to deal with if I do that.

Somebody smarter and more experienced than me, please help me get my mind back on track.

You have to switch the bigger needle to your left hand and cast on then. That’s the needle where the working yarn is anyway. So yeah, go back, undo the cast on stitches, swap the hand your needle is in then cast on.
