For the knitting olympics I am doing a colorwork hat with 6 colors. The cast on uses two colors, casting on 2 sts with each alternately for a total of 120 sts. I have been knitting for 20 years but have always shied away from colorwork, never using more than two at a time and have never used two colors to cast on before. Is there a special technique for it? Do I need to twist the colors together to prevent holes? How do I carry the yarn to hide it? Help! I feel like such a newbie…LOL. Any tips will be greatly appreciated! Oh, and the sooner the better since I’m supposed to be casting on in 7 hours  . I really should have decided to do this earlier shouldn’t I!!! I hope I don’t end up with a tangled mess of 6 colors instead of a hat!
TIA!
Casting on with two colors HELP! ASAP - TIA!
Thanks for the link, but unfortunately it doesn’t help me much. The first row would be all one color which is not what I need. It tells me to cast on 2 sts with MC and then cast on 2 sts with color B and continue in this manner until there are 120 sts. I tried my own way to do it and it doesn’t look great to me . Does anyone have any other ideas? I am at a loss here. :??
I’ve seen it done where you use a cable cast on and cast on two with one color and two with the other, stranding the unused yarn across to the next section. You could also use a long tail cast on with two strands of color. You’d have both colors in each stitch, but one would be the loop part and one would be the stitch part.
You could use the german or long tail and just alternate the colors as you cast each st on. I did this with long tail.
You can just twist the yarn between each cast on stitch…as you can see from the pic, looks just like normal.
Thank you to both of you! I got the hat cast on and did 13 rows last night. The cast on looks ok to me, and I did the long tail with alternating the two colors every two stitches. Now here’s to hoping I do the rest right!
Thanks again!
That is a really neat hat! I can’t wait to see when you are finished!
