Casting on while working

I’m knitting some mittens as my first project (not a fantastic idea I know, but I’m not new to knitting). It’s a pattern for 4 needles and is 36 stitches around.

My problem is this: it says to knit 18, slip 6 onto a holder, cast on 6 more and the knit the other 12. I don’t know how to cast on stitches part way through a project like this. Is it the same as casting on to begin my mittens? Help!

You don’t use a long tail cast one, but either a backward loop, cable, knitted or purled cast on. Look at Basic Technicques on the tab at the top of the page for instructions and videos.

Thanks a bunch. I got it figured out and now my mittens can have thumbs!
