Casting On in the Middle of a Row?

For the last of the thumb increases, the mitten patt. says: k to the last 3 sts, put those 3 sts plus the next 3 sts on a holder. Cast on 2 sts.

How do I do this cast on ? I’m using dp needles for this pattern. Any ideas?

Turn your work around and use the knitted CO.

I don’t like the looped castons except in this case - casting on over the thumb part on mittens/gloves - I think it distorts the knitting less than cabled or knitted and is less bulky, and the usual reasons I hate looping don’t apply in this kind of use. Why not try several methods and see what you like best?
