Casting on in armhole for Barbie dress

I am knitting a Barbie dress and trying to do the armholes. The pattern says:

CO 36
1: K1, P1 rib
2: Purl across
ARMHOLE SHAPING
1: K8, Cast off 5, K12, Cast off 5, K6
2: P7, Cast on 5, P11, Cast on 5, P7

The 1st row of armhole shaping is fine. However, on row 2, when I try to do a knit cast on, there is a long piece of yarn across the cast off stitches.

Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Yea, Nancy never knit Barbie clothes LOL

thanks!

“ARMHOLE SHAPING

How are you casting off? On row 1 above, you k10, pass the next to the last st on the right needle over the last st and k1, pass the next to the last st over the last and so on. I don’t see where the long piece of yarn could come from since the working yarn is always in use until the end of the row.

When you do the CO you put the R needle with the sts and working yarn into the L hand, cast on sts, then move the needle back to the R hand and knit the next sts. Shouldn’t leave a loop of yarn that way.

I can’t believe how stupid I was, that’s exactly what we ended up doing! And just to make it even more embarrassing, the gal I’m TEACHING to knit figured out the cast on! ROFL

:roflhard:
