Casting on for a hat?

Is there a trick that I can use to cast on for a hat? I’ve had such a hard time trying to gauge how round it needs to be with the different yarns/different size needles. I just bought some yarn that cost me $25.99 for a skein and I want to make sure I dont screw it up when I make this hat. The hats I tend to make are too small - but I did make a few that were extra large too. I am going to be making this hat on size 3 circulars - I was first thinking I could CO 110 but I made a baby hat with similar yarn and CO 80 and it was TINY! See - I’m awful at this.

Any ideas that can help me get this right? :doh:

Can you find a pattern that uses similar size of yarn and needles?

This site gives directions so you can knit any size hat in any gauge. Works great!
