Casting extra stitches at beginning and end of row

making a shrug cuff to cuff , the directions say:

Using the knitted method, CO 4 sts at beg and end of folowing 2 rows.

I know how to cast on in the middle of my work, but if I cast on 4 stitches at the beginning of a row, do I knit these stitches right away and when I get to the end if I cast on 4 and then turn my work to do the next row and I have to cast on in the beginning of the row again won’t that be 8 stitches casted on? This really has me confused.
Thank you for any help.
Ginny

Yes, CO at the beg of the row using a knit or cable cast on, then knit those sts and the old ones. I guess you’ll have to CO with the backward loop at the end of the row, then turn and CO 4, but you might as well turn first and CO 8, knit the new and old sts, then turn and CO 4 at the beginning. Usually sts are caston at the beg only of successive rows so it makes a gradual line along the edge of the piece. So you could just CO 4 at the beginning of the next 4 rows, especially if you just continue to knit in pattern after the sts are added. What’s the pattern? A link to it can help us help you figure it out.

No link…I have a CD with the pattern from Interweave Knits

It is called Streakers Shrug.

Here is what the pattern says:

Sleeves: (RS) using the knitted method CO 2 sts at the beg of next2 rows then CO 4 sts at beg and end of foll 2 rows, then CO 8 sts at beg of foll 6 rows . Work even in ST st until sleeve measures 10"

The shrug is done all in one piece from cuff to cuff

Ginny it’s a copyright violation to post an entire pattern so could you delete the parts that aren’t related to your question? Also please give us the name of the pattern.

Sorry! I corrected it.

Oh I made that one a while ago, but it didn’t come out right for me (wrong style for my body) so took it out. You can’t use the the knit cast on at the end of a row; I think I CO 2 sts at the beg of 2 rows, but then (since I was using a larger needle than the pattern anyway) CO something like 6 sts twice then 12 sts 2 or 4 times until I got the number of sts I needed for the sleeve measurement.

Oh and it’s not done cuff to cuff, it’s from the back to the front; these sts form the sleeves.
