Cast-on

Hi, I am very new to knitting. Someone showed me the knit stitch but I learned the rest from the great vidoes here (Thanks!). I just finished my first project - a dishcloth - the other day.

My question is about casting on. I noticed that all patterns just say cast-on. Does it matter what technique you use to do it? I learned the double-cast on (long-tail) and I’m wondering if I can use that for everything.

Also, that isn’t considered row 1, correct? Row 1 would be the row after the cast-on?

Thanks so much! I am having so much fun already!

I always use long tail (double) cast on, too. Some people count the cast on row as the first row in stockinette stitch. I don’t. I count row 1 of the pattern as row 1 of my work, so it’s really up to you. If there is some kind of stitch pattern that’s not stockinette, then don’t count the cast on row as anything but your cast on.
