Cast on?

I just want to make sure I am doing everything right. Is the cast on row ROW 1? And how do you count the rows so you know the row that you are on if you have to put the work down?:knitting:

I don’t count the cast on row as Row 1. I think (and I could be wrong) that Row 1 is the actual row you start your first stitch on. The only way I have found to keep track of how many rows I’ve done is to either keep paper and a pen handy or get a row counter.
Hope this helps.

knitaddict is right–the cast on is ‘row 0’(zero)

even if it it is a 'double" (ie long tail) cast on.
or if it is a provisional cast on.

I agree. There are several posts on this subject if you want to search, and there may be one cast on where you count that row as row 1, but i don’t remember which cast on it is.
I find that the easiest way to count rows is by making a hash mark on a small pad for each row. I never remember to move the peg, push the button or whatever for any row counter I’ve had.

I agree with everyone else on the cast on row.
Personally I count rows by either printing out the pattern or writing it out and putting a tick next to the row each time I have completed it. I don’t trust myself to do it any other way.

I noticed that with double knitting reverse thing cast on, the cast on appears as a row in the knitting, and might not fit into the pattern by making a bar on the bottom.

But I’ve decided to myself that I won’t count the cast on as a row, even if it makes a row… (unless stated so of course)

Exactly the same for me. I’d lose myself with all these rows…

The cast on is almost always NOT counted as a row. If it IS to be counted, your pattern should tell you.
