Cast-on with multiple colors?

I’m about to begin an experimental project to learn some new techniques. And I’m wondering if it’s possible to cast on two or more colors simultaneously? Could you hold the strands double and then long-tail cast on?

If so, I’m guessing you’d CO half the number called for since each CO would have 2 stitches to work with, right?

I suppose I could just try this and see what happens, but thought I’d find out from others before jumping in with both feet (or maybe I should say “with both needles”) how this works out. How would the multiple strands affect the cast on edge?
