Cast On Under Sleeve?

OK, I am not quite there yet on this sweater, but soon I’ll be to the point where I will be slipping the sleeve stitches onto a holder and will have to cast on a few stitches under the arm.

I have been thinking about this, and maybe I am over thinking it, but which cast on method is best for this? I was thinking of a simple single cast on (reverse loop) but now am not so sure.

With a single cast on, won’t those cast on stitches not be actually attached to the rest of the work above them and leave some sort of hole or gap after knitting back around and through them? Or am I thinking wrong?

I’m working on a sweater right now that asks for a cast on somewhere near the sleeves, and I’ve been thinking about what to do too. :?? I was planning on doing a knitted cast on, thinking it would be fairly stable. I thought about doing the reverse loop like you mentioned, but I’m a little afraid of the looseness too. Hopefully someone can give you a more concrete answer - because now I’m curious too.

Doh! I just realized that what’s above those stitches is arm HOLE. Geez, what was I thinking? Of course they won’t be attached because it’s a hole!

I’m still curious if the single cast on is ok for this.

I did a top from Big Girl Knits that was knit top down and they called for the backward loop cast on for an increase in the neckline. The one site I have for a top down raglan just says cast on 1" of stitches without specifying a particular one.

When called for I’ve opted for cable CO as it provides something a bit more substantial than the loop. (More to work with for the little bit of seaming and sometimes the sleeve/armhole area gets stressed.)

Thanks. I am considering the standard knit CO but I’ll think about the cable CO too.
