The question is, can I use long tail instead? will it hurt anything? This is going to be a birthday present so I’m pretty concerned. TIA
You could provide the link to the pattern… however. It should probably work out to use the LT caston instead.

Since it’s going to be felted, I can’t see any reason to use a specific cast on; maybe it’s just one the designer likes…
