Cast on mid-row for armholes

I’m making Picovoli (link in signature) and am at the armhole shaping section. The pattern says this:

“Note: When forming the armholes by casting on mid-row, you may want to cast on fairly tightly and/or use a smaller needle; the knitted cast-on in purl forms a nice, snug edge. Be aware that the first and last cast-on stitches tend to be loose. To remedy this, pick up an extra stitch at each edge of the knit fabric, then k2tog the extra stitch with the first and last cast-on stitches, respectively.”

I get the casting on part, it’s the part about picking up an extra stitch at each edge that has me stumped. Where exactly do I pick this stitch up from, AND once I figure that out, am I picking those extra stitches up during the same round that I am casting on OR am I picking up those extra stitches once I come to that spot on the following round??

Off the top of my head, I’d probably do a m1 stitch one stitch before the end of the casting on row before I cast on–that is, m1, k the last stitch, cast on, knit one, m1, finish the row, m1, k1, cast on, k1 m1, finish the row but when I get to where I cast on the first time. I’d k the last stitch together with the first cast on stitch.

Make any sense at all?

Yeah, that makes sense. Or I was thinking…what if I cast on an extra stitch at each end of the armhole and then when I get back around again, knit that extra stitch together with the last stitch before the marker??? Would that have the same effect of making sure the transition is nice and snug?

That would work, too!

Thanks my dear!
