Cast on at beginning of row?

Hi.
I am in the middle of a pattern and the directions say to “cast on 6 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows” and I have no idea how to do that. I mean, I know how to cast on, but I don’t know how to cast on when my yarn in already attached to my work in progress. Am I supposed to bind off at the end of each row, so that I can cast on the 6 stitches and then knit along my pattern? That doesn’t seem right?? If my work is on my left needle (because I am at the beginning of a row), do I have to make another slip knot and cast on the 6 stitches (and then continue along with the row as usual)? How would I know where to make the slip knot?

Is my question even making any sense??? Anyone??

You will want to do either the knit-on cast on, or the cable cast on. But instead of starting with a slip-knot like the instructions say (this is different because you are already in the midst of the project) you will use the first stitch on your left needle to start the cast on.

I use the knit cast on when I add stitches at the beginnng of a row. And you just use the first stitch on your needle then cast on the amount you need.

I just learnt how to do this yesterday.

You just go to knit like normal but instead of taking the loop onto the other needle you just put it on the same needle, one in front of the other.

I think I’ve been doing this wrong…I have to cast on 2 stitches every knit row for one of my UFO’s. I think it’s time for me to check out the video.

there are several cast ons that work --you can use any single yarn cast on!

Single yarn cast on’s include:

simple,
simple twisted
knit on
purl on
cable
crocheted (not provisional but a version of knit on using crochet hook)(sally mellville, in the Knit Stitch book, has directions for this…(and they are else where))

there are advantages and disadvantages to each of these cast ons, which one you chose is your choice.

for many, the choice comes down to which ones they know!

I personally like the simple twisted. (the base half of the norwegian twisted long tail!) its simple, and neater than a plain simple.
