Cast off

Hello fellow knitters…
:XX:
I have a question (dumb as it may be) but what does cast off mean…not sure that it would be the same as bind off.
I am knitting some mittens to felt and this part of the instruction says…
when it’s down to 12 stitches. Cast off. Break yarn leaving a long end. Sew two sets of 6 sts loosely.

Would this be grafting like a toe of a sock…? Just need clarity on “cast off”

Thanks for your help !

I’m sure ingrid is really the final authority here but as no-one’s answered yet i’ll say yes, it’s the same as bind off. Cast off is the exact same thing, there’s just the two names i think. (USA vs English maybe?) Hope it helps…

According to my finishing techniques books, Cast-off is just another way of saying Binding off.

and…there are no stupid questions… well except for that one guy who said…
j/k

Yep, it’s binding off. I wondered the same thing the first time I saw “cast off”–I was afraid I’d missed something somewhere!

Don’t hold me to this, but I believe in the USA, it’s usually referred to as “bind off” and in the UK, it’s “cast off”. I usually say “cast off” because it seems more rhetorically appropriate (you “cast on” and then “cast off”), and anyway, I DO knit “English style”…

I was saying “cast off” for the longest time when I meant “bind off” because… well, I just forgot what it was really called and got mixed up with casting on!

:cheering:

Thanks to everyone !

P.S. Where is Crest Hill, IL? We Illinois knitters are always looking to rope more IL knitters into our posse! (See “Attention all ILLINOIS knitters” thread!)

Crest Hill is between Plainfield and Joliet ! You are in Elgin correct? Howdy knitter !

I work in Elgin, live in Algonquin! Check out the “Attention all ILLINOIS Knitters” thread under General Knitting - they’re organizing a knitting get-together that looks like it’ll be on Saturday 18 March at Fringe in Aurora - think about coming!

Hello !

Unfortunately I teach a knitting class on the second and third Satuday of the month…I would have loved to be there !
