Cast off x stitiches, work x rows

Hi! I’m knitting a sweater and have knitted tmost of the back in stockinette and now have come to the part of the pattern to shape the armholes and it says:

“Cast off 3 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows.
Work 4 rows”

Does this mean I should work 2 rows with 3st cast off at the start and then work another 4 rows, or does it mean I work 2 rows with 3st cast off at the start and then work another 2 rows?

Thanks for your help!

Could you tell us the name of your pattern and what kind of armholes/sleeves it has?

It seems like the pattern is telling you to do two decrease rows and then four rows with no decreases. So a total of six rows. However, that doesn’t sound like the typical shaping for a set-in sleeve or a raglan sleeve armscye. It could be a modified drop sleeve perhaps.

If your pattern has a schematic, that may help too.

and this is what it was called "
Easy Knit Round Neck Rib Textured Sweater Raglan Sleeve Man Woman 30" - 42" Chunky Wool Knitting Pattern"

Thank you for the photo. Now we know it is a raglan sleeve.

Could you remove the image of the pattern page please – copyright law only allows for knitters to share a small section of the pattern in order to get help.

It looks like it is a total of six rows (depending on which size you are making). Just a slightly different way than I have seen before, but still valid.

I agree it is a total of 6 rows.

Patterns usually need you to work each instruction before moving on to the next part. We naturally read ahead a little and this can cause confusion.
When patterns want you to do two things AT THE SAME TIME it’s often given in uppercase to make the point. And some may say “read all of the following before moving on” to make the point that, for a change, it’s not one instruction and then the next but a set of instructions to be worked all in one go.

Come back and ask if you have more questions.

I hope you’ll share a photo of your sweater when you’ve finished.

Thank you both so much! I’ve deleted the pattern itself - apologies, my mistake! really appreciate the help - that’s super clear and yes, definitely look forward to sharing pictures when it’s done!
