Cast off or K2tog

I’m relatively new to knitting - I’ve done scarves & hats up till now which were a breeze in comparison. I’m doing an easy knit Sirdar pattern 9613 for the button up cardigan.

My question is I’ve got to the decrease point in the sleeve. It says:

Shape Raglan:

Cast off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
Work 16 rows dec 1 st at each end of next & every foll 4th row.

With it saying CAST OFF 6 sts - do I knit 2 together or cast off like you do when you bind off at the end of a project altogether. My novice instinct thinks I knit 2 tog. I had a look on the net & decreases seemed to be k2tog.

I find it a bit misleading with it using the 2 terms for shaping the raglan. In one sentence it says CAST OFF & in the next sentence it says DECREASE.

I would have thought DECREASE would be knit2tog. Is that right? I’m CONFUSED.:shrug:

It does say to shape raglan:

Work 16 rows dec 1 st at each end of next & every foll 4th row (Do I knit 2 tog here)

Getting more & more confused as I keep reading it.

Yes, cast off normally.

I agree. When the pattern says cast off, cast off.
When the instructions are to decrease you can do a k2tog which will slant to the right or a ssk which will slant to the left. Using these decreases will give you nice decrease lines up the raglan. You can see the ssk here.

I had started last night to cast off & then K2tog when it says decrease hoping I was doing the right thing. Prior to me posting on here I had looked at clips on the internet which had been quite misleading.
