I have seen a few patterns for striped scarves and such where the pattern mentions “carrying the unused color loosely along the side of the color being worked”. How is this done? Do I loop the working color around the off color on the edge, in essence “weaving” it into the side as I work the main color?
It means exactly what it says. When you change colors, don’t cut the old yarn. Just let it run up the side of your work as you go. Your idea about weaving it into the edge stitches is a good one, especially if the distance between color changes is quite wide. However, be careful that the unused yarn doesn’t show through to the front of your work.

Weaving it along the edge is good idea but watch your tension. Most tend to pull on the unused yarn causing the edge to shorten. Leave enough slack so each edge has similar stretch. (You don’t want a trapezoid.) Bear in mind the ‘woven’ edge will be thicker and will look differently than the other one. (Not an issue, so much, when seamed.)

Will give that weaving idea a try and answer back later. Was just concerned when using two contrasting colors about carrying openly down the side on something that is two-sided like a scarf…for example…
