Carrying up yarn for stripes

I’m knitting a sock that has stripes at the top. This isn’t a pattern-specific problem, because I have difficulty even when doing a sweater with stripes, in the round. Should specify that this is for in the round.

Right now, I’m doing 6 rows in a contrasting color on my sock. How do I ‘catch’ the MC while doing these rows, so that it will be where I need it? For the stripes, it’s : k2,p2 rib for 5 rows in MC; rib for 6 rows in CC; rib for 4 rows in MC; rib for 6 rows in CC; continue in rib for 6" in MC.

Since I’m not changing direction, bringing my working yarn around the outside of the other strand doesn’t ‘catch’ it, and if I bring it around the inside, well then the other strand will show on the outside of the sock. Do I twist? Am I missing something?

Help!

When you come to the beginning of a new round with the contrast color, take the main color ball and put it over the contrast color strand, and then work the rest of the round. Do this every round.

So it won’t actually be anchored anywhere? Other than the row I finished knitting with it, I mean? I think I’m just being dense and not “seeing” it. I’ll do it that way and I’m sure it will work fine.

Thanks!
