Carring yarn

I’m making a hat on circular needles with a snow flake pattern. Can I just make a long loop in back when doing just one stitch of different color and then cut the loop when I’m done and weave in the ends? :??

I think the best way to do it in a situation like this (I’m assuming it’s not just one snowflake, but a repeating pattern of them around?) is to wind a little bobbin of the snowflake color for each snowflake rather than having the long loop on the wrong side. This will help prevent any possible puckering that causes, too.
