Can't Keep the Pattern of a Neckline on a Cable sweater

Hi, my name is Carol and I have just joined the Forum. I’m fairly new to knitting beyond knit and purl and struggling to understand and keep the pattern accurate on the front neckline of Hayfield 8167. The instructions are to Pattern 36 stitches, put remining on a holder, turn and work 1st row in pattern.

It then says to decrease one stitch at neck edge of next 6 rows (30) stitches then 5 rows starting with the next row and alternate rows until 27 stitches. The problem in on the WS row I keep going wrong - it’s a combination of K / P and it throws the pattern out completely - I’m not sure I’m starting in the right place i.e. as it’s half way through a row when do I start it from?

I would be very grateful for any help to get this right - it’s the very last part and I’m justt about ready to throw it out!

Thank you
Carol

Welcome to KnittingHelp!

You are diving in with this sweater which is a lovely challenge. Yikes, definitely do not throw it out.
You’re to work across 36sts and turn as you would at the end of a row. You can place the sts remaining on the left needle on a holder or waste yarn.
You’re to decrease at the beginning of the row. The best way to work this is to make the decrease then look at the sts on the left needle (the next WS row sts to be knit). If you see a V, knit the stitch. If you see a bump or collar on a stitch purl it.

You can check this by peeking over the needle at the RS row to make sure your pattern is continuing. You don’t want the pattern to jog or misalign. Usually these aran patterns work this way on a WS row, that is by maintaining the pattern rather than changing to a new pattern.

If that doesn’t help come back and we’ll try again.

Thank you so much. It took a couple of attempts but I got it!

Oh, good going. It’s an invaluable skill to be able to look at your knitting and keep a pattern stitch aligned.
