It may be that a video will help. Here’s a slow motion knit stitch:
You want to insert the right needle into the loop on the left needle and drag the strand of yarn through the loop to make the new stitch. The video takes it slowly and repetitively.

See the video above for the knit stitch. Are you using a backward loop cast on? It may also help to use a different cast on, the knit cast on.
Salmonmac I think you may have accidentally linked the wrong video. This is KFB rather than knit.
I second the suggestion of using a knit cast on, it makes a lot of sense for a new knitter.
