For my knitting, I use the felted method when joining animal fiber yarns, but was wondering if this is acceptable to do for crochet, too.

Definitely!!! I don’t know why they don’t really teach that for crocheters. I had no clue what a felted join was until I started knitting. Now I use it all the time for crochet
