Can I do this?

I’m working on a sweater (found here) and I’ve CO the first sleeve. The pattern reads:

Cast on 30 sts loosely.
1st row: (RS). *[K2. (yfwd) twice.] Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 58sts.
2nd row: *P2. (P1. K1) into double yfwd. Rep from

  • to last 2 sts. P2.
    3rd row: K1. *Sl1. K1. psso. (yfwd) twice. K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1.
    4th row: As 2nd row.
Rep 3rd and 4th rows for Open Rib Pat.

This creates a large bell sleeve which isn’t really my thing, so I’m casting on 22 sts and I’ll adjust the pattern later as needed. But I don’t want the open rib pattern to be as big as the pattern would make it. I would like to do only one yo instead of two, but I have a couple questions. On the row after the double yo, it says to p1 k1 into the yos. If I only have one yo, do I purl it or knit it? Or does it even matter? And will it affect the integrity of the pattern?

The reason they have you knit and purl into the double yo is because otherwise it would slip off the needle. Since there’s regular ribbing along the bottom, I think I’d purl it just for a little continuity.
