Can I do this pattern in a different weight yarn?

Hi,

I want to make this sweater with a finer gauge yarn:

I really like the cut of the sweater, but could do without the bulk. The yarn I want to use gives 17 st per 4 inches in stockinette using size 8 needles. I guess that’s considered a worsted weight or a bit lighter?

I’m an ambitious advanced beginner and I am totally comfortable with the math involved such as multiplying dimensions by gauge to figure out number of stitches and rows and figuring out ratios and adjusting accordingly for increases/decreases, etc.; but am wondering if there are other pit-falls that I’m still too ignorant to be aware of.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

If you can deal with the math, you can make a sweater in any yarn. However, if you’d rather not, there are a bazillion free patterns at www.knittingpatterncentral.com You could most likely find a cardigan pattern there in worsted.

Thanks, Ingrid. Actually, I have checked out the site you mentioned, as well as a bunch of others. I’m looking for a boxy cut with a scooped out neckline and a bit of a cropped length (although not too short). I also found this sweater, but wasn’t sure if I would like the sideways stitch.

Most of the candidates I saw were done in a bulky yarn, so I guess a better question would have been whether the particular cut I want doesn’t lend itself to a finer gauge yarn.

I knitted up my swatches last night and found a gauge I liked and calculated out the pattern conversions, so now I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that it will knit up the way I’m hoping.
