Can I cry? First toe-up sock

I’ve cast this darn thing on at least six or seven times and I’m not happy. Here’s the deal.

I want to make socks for my ds6 using the book More Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch. I’ve chosen the stitch pattern (a 4-stitch repeat). I’d like to try toe-up this time, using the Magic Loop method (for the first time) and the magic cast-on taught by Cat Bordhi that I saw on YouTube. (I also tried using the figure 8 cast-on from the Magic Loop pamphlet but didn’t like it.)

So the problem: the book has instructions for 2 circs but I think I can translate to Magic Loop with no problem. The problem is in translating the cast-on from the book. They show an “Easy Toe” cast on using waste yarn and a crochet hook. No thanks. Also, I’m supposed to knit a rectangle before beginning the toe increases, and somehow pick up the sides of the rectangle and incorporate them into the toe. I’m sure if I just followed the instructions it would make sense but they don’t, and besides I really want to use the magic cast on.

And the question: Can I just do the magic cast-on, st st for an inch or so with M1L and M1R increases on either side, then begin following the pattern when I get to knitting even for the foot? I’m nervous that I won’t be increasing enough if I just wing it and it won’t go around his foot.

Sorry for the length and I hope it makes sense. This is only my second pair of socks and I’ve only been knitting since August, so part of me says, “Just go back to scarves, you dimwit!” :eyes:

Go ahead and try it. If it doesn’t look good, try something else.

go for it…

i know (as you know!) way too many cast on’s, and while i think that cat bordhi’s explaination is OK, i think the video is great…

the magic cast on is a great cast on (and readily adaptable to doing 2 socks at a time (either on 2 circs, or ML style)

at first the increases look dorky.(or i thought so!) but after a few rows, they look fine.

:cheering: go for it!! Then let us know how you liked it…
