Can I add COLOUR to a plain pattern?

I want to knit a slouchy hat, but I really want to add some colour to the pattern.

This is the hat I think I want to make.

I was thinking I would like to have a sort of gradient, or dipped look with the a MC and CC. This is the sort gradient look I was thinking of.

I am using Antique Cobalt and Diamond Mine. They both have a sort of gradient in their colouring, so I thought it would be able to make a more subtle gradient transition.

Could I just mix the two colours in the first few rows before switching totally to the second colour to make the transition a little softer?

I THINK I would have the bottom the white colour, and the top would be dark… It might be better the other way around though. I am not sure.

I could also try to make just the cables a second colour? Not sure which would better for that.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like you’ve got good suggestions already. One thing I would look up though is intarsia cables, as that technique will show you what you need to do to include color(s) in your cabling.

I don’t think that would be the easiest pattern to add color. People usually like to change color on a knit row so you get a nice sharp color change, but you have different stitches on the row so you’ll have the purl bumps showing on the row you change color on I think. If you’re okay with that then go for it! you could try it and if you don’t like it just take hat row out and do solid.
