Hi Everyone,
I am quite new to knitting and so after a few simple knitting projects decided to start a baby cardigan (ambitious I know!). So far so good but now I am stuck. I am about to start shapin the armholes and would love some help with this.
The pattern now is made of 2 rows:
1st Row: K2tog, *p1,k3 rep from * to last 3, p1, K2tog (47stitches)
2nd Row: K2tog, k1, *p1,k3 rep from * to last 4, p1, k1, K2tog (45stitches)
It then says repeat these rows 3 times dec 1 st at a time at each end of row (39 stitches) so I’m guessing I copy rows 1 and 2 exactly three more times?
The next line says, Continue without shaping until armholes measure 10 cm ending with a ws row. I’m not sure how to continue without shaping. Does that mean that for the first row for example I just ignore the K2tog and start with p1,k3?
Any help would be very much appreciated
Thanks
Hi. Welcome to KH. I’m not so lovely but will try to help.
It looks to me like you’ve got it right. I would make one small change. I would K1, then k2 tog at the beginning of the row, get back in pattern as quickly as I can, then work my end of the row decrease so that I k1 as the last stitch. This will move your decreases in a stitch and give you a nicer edge for seaming, much easier to work with.
Can you link to your pattern, please? It’s really helpful. Thanks!
Hi Grumpy Gramma,
Here is a link to a photo of the pattern.

I can’t find the actual pattern online…I bought a hard copy.
Thanks so much for your reply. I’m a little bit confused though. The pattern doesn’t give me the option to move the decrease in a stitch, it just says start with K2tog and being so inexperienced I’m afraid to amend it.
Also, just wondering if you know what they mean me to do by continue without shaping?
Thanks
Continue without shaping means to just keep working your pattern without decreasing or increasing until you reach the given measurement, 10 cm. You don’t need to change how the decreases are worked if you’re not comfortable with it. Other, more experienced knitters better able to communicate how to do it are around should you care to wait for their input.
That’s a really cute sweater, and maybe it’s a bit ambitious but you can do it. You’re not the only one to start with a sweater, the one I did was for a 10 yr. old boy.
Welcome to KH!
You won’t be able to continue rows 1 and 2 exactly and maintain the pattern because you have decreases at each end. So if row 1 begins with the k2tog, p1, k3, p1, k3 etc., row 3 will begin with k2tog k3, p1, k3 etc. Each time you decrease a stitch, you’ll have to ignore one more stitch at the beginning of the pattern. (The end of the row is easier to work becauss you simply run out of sts and have to do the decrease with the last 2sts).
I like GG’s recommendation to move the decreases one stitch in but she’s right again in that if you’re not comfortable with that, then follow the pattern directions as given.
An easy way to do the decreases and the rows without shaping is to “read” the stitches that you have already knit and use that to tell you where to begin the pattern stitches. You want the columns of sts to line up nicely without a break or jog.
Adorable sweater, btw!
