Calculating gauge

Hi , if I can,t get gauge for a pattern and i,ve tried switching needle size ect I understand that if knitting in the round a possible solution may be to do the following.
Ex
14sts per 4in … 14÷4 = 3.5 this is st per inch
3.5 × the chest size will then give me the number of stitches I need for my size .
If I,m working a top down sweater I then look at the stitch count after I,ve split for sleeves and this should help with knitting to correct size . I know its not an exact science and other factors need to be considered .
My question is if I,m knitting a sweater in pieces when I work out St’s per inch do I times by the chest size and then divide the number so I have stitche count for a front and back . Sorry this is long winded . Thank you

Yes, that works.
A schematic usually gives a measurement across but this is not the chest size, it is the width when laid flat. If your pattern has a schematicnit may help to look at the measurements there to compare with the size you want.
But what you said is correct. The chest measurement is all the way around so halve it for knitting flat front and back…so long as your pattern is a regular shape where front and back are basically the same.

When you have chosen the correct size for the chest you can likely follow that size pattern throughout- as you said it’s not exact but should work well.

You can check things like neck width and shoulder width before you get too far down the top, they ought to measure up to the size you want.
