Calamity Jane scarf

The pattern has a border, the instructions have rows 1-4, and the knit instructions have you knit less than the full row, and only rows 2 & 3 say to turn the work… so on rows 1 & 3 which you also do not knit all the row stitches, do you turn the work to knit rows 1 & 3 also??? Is there a reason the instructions don’t tell you to “turn your work” like rows 2 & 4 tell you???

Help is appreciated. This is for a lacy border on Kirsten Hipsky’s Calamity Jane scarf pattern.

I aleady looked this up on another popular forum with no success :unamused:. Thank you

Welcome to the forum!

Lovely scarf. It may be that you work the full border on some rows and short rows on the other two, the ones that say to turn. Can you quote the border rows for us? Not any more than that please. We can’t post large portions of a pattern due to designer copyright.

CO 4 add. Stitches
set up row: k5, turn work
R1. K3, yo twice, k2tog
R2. Yo, k2, p1, k2, k2tog. Turn work
R3. K7
R4. BO 2, k3, k2tog Turn work

Repeat 1-4 until all main body sts have been worked, BO all edge sts.

Rows 1 & 3 end at the outer edge of the border so there’s no short row and you turn as you would at the end of any row.
Rows 2 & 4 end at the inner edge of the border so the pattern has you turn working a short row at that point.
In the beginning of the row you cast on 4 additional sts. How many sts do you have on the needle before the cast on of the 4 additional sts? or is this the body of the scarf?

This is the edging of a finished scarf. When I knit it as written, the edging looked nothing like the photo. So I decided to leave it off, I finished the scarf & am now looking for a border to attach by picking up and knitting off the bound edge. I dislike giving up but I couldn’t get the look in the photo. Thank you for your support and help. I really appreciate it. Lavolily

Well, I see that there are other projects on the Ravelry page where knitters have worked their own border. I’m sure you’ll be able to find one that you like better. There are books of edgings by Nicky Epstein that may help with a new choice.

My public library has these and you might check yours for both books.

(On the pattern as given, the double yarn over creates the large eyelet. On the next row, you knit and then purl into the double yarn over. The bind off creates the little bump at the outer edge.)

The Library! Great idea - it’s a “why didn’t I think of that” moment. Thank you!
