I am knitting a cape on 12mm needles and am finding that I am getting quite big holes by the sides of the cable stitches. Anyone got any tips?

I’m not an expert on cables by any means, but I know the holes are a common issue. I remember hearing that its recommended that you don’t knit the cable stitches too tightly. The tighter the stitches, the bigger the holes will be. Hope that helps!
Holy moley! Those are some giant needles! 12mm is equivalent to US17, right?
Anyway, here’s my 2 cents:
I think it’s the combination of a huge needle and stitch manipulation (cable). I recommend that you snug up your stitches when working the cables. Try to work the cables with just the tips of the needles. Go slow. Make sure not to stretch out the yarn.
What yarn are you using? Some yarns are just more slippery and difficult to manage…but it can be done!

I think that’s pretty common and not necessarily undesirable. The cable is pulling and you’re going from a purl to a knit (usually) and with both those things combined with giant needles you’re going to have a hole.
You could just consider it a design feature. 
Yes, that’s pretty normal for cables with any size needle and the gaps will even out when you wash and/or block when finished.
Funny patterns they are!!! What I do if making the cables, once you’ve done the first set of sts bring the other sts very close to the other sts by pulling tightly with the yarn.
The hole should be a little smaller.
