Cabling in Rev. St st

I’m trying to make a cabled purse. I have done cables before with no problems. But, this pattern is in Rev. St st and I am having trouble getting the cable to “pop out” UGH! :hair: I’m sure that I am doing something wrong, but I don’t know what. Can anyone help me please??? :frog: btw…love the knitting smili’s!!! :yay:

Most cables are worked against a bg of rev st st for just that reason (k against p)…to make them more obvious. What patt are you working (is there a link?) and how large are the cables? How much of the patt have you done? (Sometimes it takes a bit for the cabling to become distinctive.)

I agree–the background is usually rev st st and the cables are usually in stockinette.

Thanks! Here is a link to the Celtic Tote. http://www.pieknits.com/blog/2007/10/celtic_tote_now_up_in_the.html It is soooooooo cute! I special ordered the Lamb’s Pride yarn and everything. :stuck_out_tongue: I fell in love with this bag. I went with a yarn with less of a gold tone, it is moar. Let me know what you all think. I got the pattern from the winter 2007 issue of Interweave Knits. I appreciate your help so much!

Oh, also the first row of the Cable chart is (RS) and calls for k7 then work the cable pattern, then k8, cable pattern, k7 again. Is that right? Then it says to k inbetween the cable pattern on the (WS). :?? That creates an indent, then for rows 3 &4 it just says29 sts for each cable, 8 sts between cables, 6 sts each side?? Do I do these stiches (RS) purl??? or knit???

Here is another link that has a bigger pic http://www.interweaveknits.com/galleries/bonus/winter2007/tallapaneni.asp

Let me know what you think.

I want to thank you all in advance for your help! I am sort of a newbie…been working with yarn my whole life, but pretty new to knit. It’s so awesome that I can come here and ask for help. :muah:

:aww: Okay, I need to read my own links before I post a question. There is a correction on her blog. Thanks for everything anyway!!!:aww:

I’m off to play. :knitting:

I also noticed that on her blog she says that she sewed some contrasting yarn around the cable to make it show up better. Did you realize they did that? That is why the cable shows up so much better when it is done.

Errata!
Under Back, after casting on and working 6 rows in rev St st it should read:
Next row: (RS) P7, place marker (pm), work Row 1 of Celtic Cable chart over next 21 sts (inc to 25 sts as shown on chart), pm, p8, pm, work Row 1 of Celtic Cable chart over next 21 sts (inc them to 25 sts as shown on chart), pm, p7–72 sts.

I’m assuming that this is the correction you found, but just in case. . .

Thanks Ladies!

Merigoldin I knew that it had contrasting color, but thought it would stand out more…I’m still working on it. Thanks.
