Cable Scarf Question

Hello everyone!

I’m knitting my first cable scarf (finally got around to getting cable needles  ) and the stitches that are a part of the cable, are REALLY TIGHT. When I say tight, I mean so tight that I am having a little difficulty getting my needles through them when I have to knit them. It is only the stitches that are actually in the cable, not the ones that aren’t.

Here is the pattern that I am making…
Good Ole Cable Scarf

Is this always the case when knitting, that the cable stitches will be tight? Or is there a way to prevent this?

Thank you!

You might be a tight knitter, so try going up a size or 2 on the needle, that makes cabling easier. Also check that you’re not twisting the held sts aroun when you knit them off the stitch holder/cable needle. Put the first 3 sts on the needle, knit the next 3 off the L needle, then the first 3 in the same order they appear on the cable needle.

Oh, if you could post a picture, that may help determine what the problem is.

Alrightie. I have knit several scarves with cable work so maybe I can offer some advice here, or at least just give my opinion. I agree with Suzeeq. If you’re a tight knitter you might want to move up a needle size or two. But think about it…you are twisting/moving a group of stitches around each other!!:gah: For me at least there’s always some tightness as you knit the cable part. My next row is always a bit “tighter” too. (You’re knitting those stitches that have just been twisted around. ) Best of luck with your scarf. You’ll have to post a picture when it finished.
