Cable pattern confusion

Can someone please help me with the “Winterfolk” pattern? I’m getting confused on the cable pattern. A lot of times it just says work following cable Row.

Right now I’m having issues at the Shoulder Shaping.

Here is the repeated cable pattern:

Here Is the start of my confusion.
Shoulder Shaping
Row 1 (RS): K to m, m1r, sm, k3, sm, m1l, k to m, sm, work foll row of Cable, sm, k to m, m1r, sm, k3, sm, m1l, k to last wrapped st and knit it with its wrap, k to end (slipping last m).

Row 2 (WS): P1, work row 12 (12, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14) of the Cable, sm, p to m, m1pl, sm, p3, sm, m1pr, p to m, sm, work foll row of Cable, sm, p to m, m1pl, sm, p3, sm, m1pr, p to last wrapped st and purl it with its wrap, p to m, sm, work row 14 of the Cable, p1.

You should have 166 (172, 186, 186, 186, 192, 192, 198) sts: 49 (51, 55, 55, 55, 57, 57, 59) sts for each of the fronts, 62 (64, 70, 70, 70, 72, 72, 74) sts for the back and 3 sts on each shoulder line.

Row 3 (RS): K1, work foll row of Cable, sm, k to m, m1r, sm, k3, sm, m1l, k to m, sm, work foll row of Cable, sm, k to m, m1r, sm, k3, sm, m1l, k to m, sm, work foll row of Cable, k1.

Repeat Rows 3-4 1 (1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5) more times, and then Row 3 1 more time.

Welcome to KH!

That coat really is a delight to see.

You’ll have to keep separate track of the pattern row and the cable pattern row. That way you’ll be able to know which row of the cable pattern to work next.
If that doesn’t answer your question just let us know. We’ll all be happy to help.

Thank you for your response. I understand keeping separate track of the cable row and pattern rows. Where I’m confused is at row 2-4 of the Shoulder shaping. It says work cable row 14 then foll row of cable (which would be 15) then work cable Row 14 again. Then on the next pattern row it says work foll cable Row. So at this point am I supposed to work 15 again or go to sixteen because I already worked 15 earlier???

I read foll cable row as a continuous working of the cable pattern, row 14, row15, then 16, then 17.
Is that what you’re asking about? If not I’ll try again.

I’ll try that. Thx.

Ok. It seems to be working now. Ty. However I’m not getting a line through my cable. I think it on the C4PB or C4PF. Any suggestions?

It looks quite nice to me. It may be that it’s early in the cable.
It would help to take scrap yarn and just work the cable pattern so that you can assure yourself about all the cable lines and crosses.

Oh wow. That’s a great idea!!! Thank you for your help.

I worked the cable rows and was able to figure this out. It’s not at all like I thought. So in the begging of the pattern there is only one cable section to work (the 28 sts in the middle). Then as you start to work the Shoulder shaping rows it goes to three sections (the two ends and the middle). When it says work Row 12 (14) of cable all three cable sections are actually across. Then on the next pattern Row do you also go to the foll cable Row.

This pattern is written differently than In used to. But I’m glad I was able to figure it out, thx to your suggestions @salmonmac
