Cable counting help!

NEED PATTERN HELP!
Hi everyone! Hope all is well. I am knitting this really great cardigan but have come across a glitch in the pattern that I need another pair of eyes to see…it’s quite long, so bear with me the part I don’t understand is in bold.

"Work in St. st. for two more rows, ending with RS facing.
On next row (RS), K6, P3, K to first marker, slip marker, K to second marker, slip marker, K3, P3, K1, P3, K3, slip third marker, K to 4th marker, slip marker, K to 9 before end, P3, K6.

Work 7 more rows, ending on a RS row. On next row (RS), begin this cable pattern (in brackets):
[R1: K3, C6F, work to first marker, slip marker, work to second marker, slip marker, C6F, K1, C6B, slip third marker, work to 4th marker, slip marker, work to 9 before end, C6B,K3.
R2-8: Work all stitches as established.]
Throughout the entire pattern, maintain this 8 row cable pattern while following all other instructions.
Continue working as established until you have completed 23 rows and have a RS facing (this should be R3 for your second cable pattern repeat). "
I am not sure where I start counting that “23” from?? any ideas?

I believe it’s a total of 23 rows.

After you’ve completed one full repeat of the 8-row cable pattern, you should work 2 more rows. That’ll put you on the right side, ready to work row 3 of your second cable repeat.

THANKS INGRID…
That is kind of what I thought, but I kept getting stumped because the numbers don’t match up. if I do 23 rows in total, I don’t end up on R3 of the cable, I end up on 5 or something …going in for the kill today  THANK YOU AGAIN!:cheering:

However many rows it turns out to be, stop at the row 3 since the directions go from there.

then let me ask just ONE more thing…I have completed in total 19 rows already from the very beginning not including the CO…
so if I need 23 rows, it brings me to R4 of the 1st repeat…
BUT in the whole picture, it is technically R4 of the cable repeat. What do you think about that?

Technically, the first set of cable directions might not be considered a ‘repeat’.

So if you work 2 stockinette rows = 2
work first cable set up = 8
work first cable ‘repeat’ = 8
work 2 more rows of second repeat so you’re ready to start row 3 = 2

That comes to 20, :??

Guess this doesn’t help much, huh?

I actually decided to fumble through it and see what happened…
I stopped counting the rows and just continued until the R3 part and moved on. As I got through more and more of the pattern I noticed more and more mathematical mistakes.

I was supposed to have had 168 stitches after the next part (a bunch of increases) and wound up with like 172 so I had to actually P2tog a few times on the WS to make it right…
THEN after repeating another section of increases (which for my size was 10 times) I was supposed to have 207 stitches and wound up with like 218, so I had to do the increase section for the next size down…WHEW…

It stinks to b/c it’s a cool pattern but I wrote the author an email last thursday and got no resp. (BOOO)
I might use this one as my “prototype”, go back to the downloaded pattern, “fix” it and save it. Good thing I used cheap-o Bernat yarn b/c I would be so mad if it were the good brown sheep co yarn I planned to use.
Thanks for all of your help!!!:muah:

UPDATE!!!
Okay, feeling better knowing I am NOT losing my mind…got in touch with the author of the pattern, and yes there are tons of mistakes in it and she fixed them all up for me.
I was right about that whole counting the rows and 23 and blah blah…it so happened that it worked out to end up on R5 after all, not R3, and I wasn’t counting wrong…WHEW! Well, the good thing is this is my prototype sweater and I will not feel bad if I wear it somewhere where it might get yukked up.
