Cable bootie help

I’m doing thisbootie pattern. I’m done with the side and ready to start the top of the bootie. What worries me about it is this…

This section is the top of the bootie.
k15, p2, k4, p2, k1, leave remaining sts unworked.

Slip all sts with yarn in front:
Row 1: Sl 1 from left to right needle, turn, p2, k2, p4, k2, p1
Row 2: Sl 1, turn, k2, p2, slip two sts to cable needle and hold in front, k2, k2 from cable needle, p2, k2
Row 3: Sl 1, turn, p3, k2, p4, k2, p2
Row 4: Sl 1, turn, k3, p2, k4, p2, k3
Row 5: Sl 1, turn, p4, k2, p4, k2, p3
Row 6: Sl 1, turn, k4, p2, slip two sts to cable needle and hold in back, k2, k2 from cable needle, p2, k4
Row 7: Sl 1, turn, p5, k2, p4, k2, p4
Row 8: Sl 1, turn, k5, p2, k4, p2, k5
Row 9: Sl 1, turn, p6, k2, p4, k2, p5
Row 10: Sl 1, turn, k6, p2, slip two sts to cable needle and hold in front, k2, k2 from cable needle, p2, k5
Row 11: Sl 1, turn, p7, k2, p4, k2, p6
Row 12: Sl 1, turn, k7, p2, k4, p2, k to end of row

I understand that rows 1-12 are the actual cable portion of the bootie. But once I finish this, what about the 24 unworked stitches on all the rows? When you finish the cable portion, the pattern doesn’t tell you how to work these stitches, it just goes into the eyelet then cuff and boom you’re done.

Do I work the stitches while doing the rows? Working them backwards on the rows I have to turn on? I must admit, this confuses me very much.

Your link didn’t work for me, maybe that is why no one else has addressed your question. But my DH helped me figure out a way to find the pattern anyway. I looked at it and even worked a little starting with the 38 stitches you would have at this point.

This is one of the magical knitting things. If you just follow the pattern it will all work out. :-)You are doing short rows, and the slipping you do takes a stitch from each side and incorporates it into the shaping. Trust the pattern and see the magic.

Row 1 says, “Slip one from the left to right needle, turn.” At the beginning of each row when it says slip one (sl 1) you will do that same thing. Turn means you exchange the needles in your hands and begin to work in the opposite direction. It really seems to me that you do the slip one at the end of each row before you turn and work the next row though. For instance after that very first " k15, p2, k4, p2, k1," that is in dark print, you do that, then slip the stitch and turn and begin doing row 1. It seems to me it works that way each time. Do what it gives for the row, then at the end of the row instructions slip one stitch from the left needle to the right needle then turn and do the next row’s instructions.

deep breaths

Okay, I can do a toe up sock with a short row heel in ML…
I can do complicated intarsia…

I will not let a cable bootie beat me. I’ll follow the pattern and hopefully have something productive to show in a little bit. Thank you!

Where it says `knit to the end of the row’ on row 12 that’s where you’ll knit the sts that were left unknitted while doing the short rows. Don’t worry, just follow the pattern and it all works out. It’s much easier to just work them step by step than to try and figure it out in your head.

I did it! I just finished row 12 and really, I should have just trusted the pattern. I’m being summoned to bed now, but I should have some pictures tomorrow. Thanks again!
