Hi everyone,
I am trying to make this adorable little baby sweater and I know how to do a cable stitch but when it comes to this cable 2 twist I cant figure it out. The directions say "A cable 2 twist is worked as follows: Knit two together leaving stiches on the left needle, insert right needle in between 2 stitches just knitted together and knit the first stitch again, slip both stitches from the left needle."
Sounds simple enough but if I am knitting two stitches together I get confused because knitting the two together decreases a stitch and then where do I insert the right needle if I do that cuz there is only one stitch left over. If someone could help me figure this out or give me a reference as to where I could go to get help with this I would so incredibly appreciate it because I am making this sweater for a friend at work and the baby is not getting any smaller. Thank you!
:doh That one has got me too. The looks of it you are decreasing and where is the increasing st. That has baffled me.
In the pattern dose it say yfwd or some sort for increasing.
It sounds tricky but do-able. What the directions is telling you is to insert the right needle onto to first stitch of the two you just knitted together and knit it again. Kind of a make one with the stitch below. When you knit the first stitch of the k2tg you have made an increase but I don’t see where it tells you to put it on the left needle. When you knit the first stitch again it is now on the right needle and you can slip the other stitch off the left and onto the right.
If you go ahead and try it you’ll see it does work. You will knit the 2 stitches together and instead of sliding the 2 loops of the stitches knit off the left needle you leave them there, you now have the new loop on the right needle from the decrease and the original 2 stitches on the left needle. I find if I pull a little on the right needle to enlarge the new stitch it makes it easier to slip the tip of the right needle to slip in in between the 2 stitches on the left needle and knit the 1st stitch again and then slip the 2 original stitches off the left needle. You will then have 2 new stitches on the right needle, therefore no decrease. It’s a very pretty stitch pattern and once you get a few under your belt it becomes routine.

okay but now Im creating an extra stitch and it looks weird. I feel so stupid that I cant get this. I knit the first two together I didnt remove anything off the left needle and left the right needle stitch on, then I put the right needle between the first two stitche and knitted the first stich again but when I pull the stiches off I have 3 stiches instead of two on the right needle. Im so frustrated and I just really am determined to make this sweater. Anymore insight???
ahhhhhhh i just sat down and tried it again and figured out what I did wrong. Thank you sooo much everyone… Im so excited
Isn’t the greatest feeling when all of a sudden things fall into place and you GET IT. I love that feeling and just took up spindle spinning and am having a blast getting the hang of it. Once I get over the frustration of course.
