Buttonholes

Hi, I haven’t posted before but I’m really stuck and I’m hoping someone can help me! I’m knitting a Sirdar pattern 1583 (I think it’s that one as the numbers are half chopped off at the top of the page) and I’m stuck on buttonholes in the Right Front Border for a Girl. I have picked up the stitches and creating the border. My question is how do I keep the ribbing correct after making the buttonhole? When I cast off, is this always knitwise? Here’s the instruction: RIB 2 CAST OFF 2STS RIB 6 CAST OFF 2 STS 4 TIMES, RIB 1 Next row: RIB 2 CAST ON 2 STS RIB 7 CAST ON 2 STS 4 TIMES RIB 2. I can’t seem to make the ribbing correct, do I cast off purlwise if that stitch was meant to be a purl rib? Sorry for the long post and thank you.

Welcome to KH!

You can either cast off in pattern, knitwise or purlwise or you could just cast off knitwise. Either will work especially since it’s only 2sts.
Follow the ribbing pattern from the previous rows. You want the ribbed pattern to continue to line up.

Thank you so much. I will give it a go!

Hello again, I have ended up with 7 stitches instead of 2 at the end of the buttonhole row. I have ribbed 14 and cast off 2 sts 5 times, after the initial rib 4 cast off 2 at the beginning and have the correct amount of sts on the needle (82) but I have too many sts to rib at the end. I’m working the largest size. Hope this makes sense! And attach a picture of the pattern. Thank you.

When you rib 4, cast off 2, you’ll have one stitch on the right needle leftover from the cast off. +Now rib 14 more sts. That’ll give you 15sts on the right needle. Now rib 2 more and cast off one, rib one more and cast off one. Again you’ll have one stitch on the right needle after the gap. Repeat this from the + for the rest of the button holes.

Sometimes a pattern is very clear on this leftover stitch but this pattern isn’t.

Thank you very much. I found a good tutorial that explained it and I have put it right. Buttonholes seem to be my bugbear!

Awaiting buttons to arrive from Amazon, they say expected next Fri-Mon :slightly_frowning_face: I will post a picture when it’s done. The buttonholes are ok but I def think there’s room for improvement!

I popped to Hobbycraft today for the buttons (shops have just opened after lockdown) :hugs: as didn’t like the ones I ordered from Amazon.

It looks fabulous! What yarn did you use? It’s really pretty.
