Hello, I’m very new to knitting and finding this forum very helpful. I’m stuck on buttonholes and when it says Rib 3, cast off 1. Do I rib 3 the first 3 stitches then knit the next 2 stitches together? As I’m typing I’m thinking that’s a yes but not sure.

Yes that is one way of doing it. I prefer for a button hole to do a cast off where you knit both stitches and pass one over the other, but it is a matter of preference.

The way the pattern suggests and Trisha explains is really a better option. K2tog is going to give you a very small buttonhole, even with a cast on stitch in the next row.
