Butterfly Cable Blanket

I am interested in making this blanket.
https://www.joann.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-joann-project-catalog/default/dwb7d31ae9/images/hi-res/project/pdf/312113911P426.pdf BUT, I am a little confused about the instructions
Bramble Stitch (multiple of 4 sts)
Row 1 (wrong side): *(K1, p1, k1) in next st,
p3tog; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: *P3tog, (k1, p1, k1) in next st; repeat
from * to end of row.
Row 4: Purl.
Repeat these 4 rows for Bramble st pattern.

Row 1 (wrong side): Slip 1, k2, place marker
(pm), work Row 1 of Bramble st pattern to last
3 sts, pm, k3.
Row 2 (right side): Slip 1, p2, slip marker
(sm), work next row of Bramble st pattern to
marker, sm, p2, k1.
Row 3: Slip 1, k2, sm, work next row of
Bramble st pattern to marker, sm, k3.
Rows 4–15: Repeat last 2 rows 6 more times.

*Rows 4-15 is where I am confused, What rows am I repeating? Bramble stitch rows 4 and 1 or rows 2 and 3 of the Bramble stitch? I am just unsure

Hello
The repeated rows are those of the main pattern, rows 2 RS and row 3 RS, both rows include the instruction "work next row of bramble stitch pattern " and the bramble stitch pattern row will change each time.

Row 2 rs slip 1 p2, sm, next row of bramble (row 2 of bramble), sm, p2, k1
Row 3 ws slip 1, k2, sm next row of bramble (row 3 of bramble), sm , k3
Row 4 (work as row 2 but bramble row changes) sl1, p2, sm, bramble row 4, sm, p2, k1
Row 5 work as row 3 but bramble row changes) sl1, k2, sm, bramble row 1, sm, k3
Row 6 work as row 2 with bramble row 2
Row 7 work as row 3 with bramble row 3
Row 8 work as row 2 with bramble row 4
Row 9 work as row 3 with bramble row 1
Continue like this until 16 rows complete.

Hope that helps

thank you so much for explaining that to me- I really appreciate it!

You’re welcome. It’s a lovely blanket, I have it saved for a possibly future project.

Is there a way I can keep track of the Bramble rows and rows 2 and 3- I realize that as I get further along, there may be some more confusion, so I am looking for a way to remember or track

I use multiple row counters when I have something like this. Mine are the plastic barrel type which I turn manually to move on , they can go on the needle but I usually don’t put them on the needle. I’d have 2 different colour row counters and mark my pattern so I knew which counter went with which part of the pattern. I asked the supplier to send a certain colour when I needed 4 of these for one pattern.
Otherwise, a paper clip on the 4 row repeat which can be moved on the print out or a post it sticker which can be moved to each row.

The row counters work very well as Creations mentioned. I also like to use a spreadsheet either on the computer or app or pencil and paper. One column for the overall row number and then columns for the stitch patterns. You can check them off as you work.
For this bramble pattern and repeats, the pattern wants you to work to and including row 15 (a row 3 of the Bramble stitch pattern). That’s a WS row. The next part of the pattern (Begin Cable Pattern) starts with a RS set up row which continues the Bramble stitch pattern.

Thanks for the catch of the row 15 @salmonmac, I see I made a mistake and put row 16.

@Melanie_Patterson sorry for the mistake there, hopefully you haven’t got that far yet!

My row counters are like these

17351047905894348921140006770604

They come in different sizes and colours. At one point I had 2 reds but one was large the other small so “big red” written by one pattern and “small red” written by another, I have yellow, green and blue too. I just like them. The better quality ones (still very low price, basic) start a bit stiff but loosen with use, the cheap quality can fall apart as soon as you get them. I sometimes put 2 or 3 on one long stitch holder next to me so they are all together for various cables. And if needed I put a marker of the same colour on my fabric to remind me which chart and row counter it is.

Thanks for that! I am not there yet! I have a stitch counter like that, so good idea, I will use that

So I am not there yet, but I noticed there is an error in stitch count on the set up row, it says the butterfly is worked over 23 stitches but it is actually only 22- does this completely change everything?

Good pick up. If you’ve already started the border you could just decrease a stitch in the two places where the Butterfly pattern occurs when you get to it. The Butterfly pattern increases and decreases as you work the chart
The pattern sts plus the sts between patterns add up to 286 using 23sts for the Butterfly pattern so the cast on hasn’t accounted for the chart stitch count.

So where should I decrease? You said in the two places- Now I am more confused. Does that mean that my stitch count before starting the butterfly should be 285 instead of 286? I am hoping to get to the set up row today so it would be good to know

I just downloaded the pattern again and recounted. There are 23sts in the Butterfly chart. Twenty-two sts are purl and one central knit. I wonder how I ever counted 22sts? Well, sorry for adding to the confusion. You’re set to go with the cast on and following the charts for this heirloom blanket. Happy holidays!

I was on row 15, and row 13 was fine- I came to the end and I didn’t have the right amount of stitches! ROW 15- Do you know how much work that is??? I took out 4 + rows and couldn’t get my stitch count right. I frogged THE WHOLE THING!

Oh no! I’m sorry. Yes, anytime you’re working across more than 200sts it’s a major project.
When you’re ready to start again, a lifeline or several lifelines is a must.

For this blanket, I’d use one every 2-4 rows. Are you using those needles with a small hole near the join, the hole that can be used to lead a strand of waste yarn for a lifeline?
