Brooke Baby Afghan

Hello to all of you, I am new to this site and hope to hear from you.
I found this pattern at Gallentine.org. It looks really easy to do, but for some reason I have a problem with it. I know how to do a bar increase in a pattern but could someone tell me what is the difference between these two rows in that pattern: first you have to cast 96sts, and the row 10 says: k5, k2tog across row to last 5 sts, k5 ( easy) then row 11: k5,*k in bar before next st, k1, repeat from *to last 5 sts, k5 (easy), then on row 15: k5,*k1,k in bar before next st, repeat from *to last 5 sts, k5. What is the difference between rows 11 and 15. I should go back to 96sts. on my needle. I’ve seen the video how to do a bar increase by the way.And that is the way I did the bar increase on row 11.Thank you for the help

On row 11 after you do your initial k5, the way you have it written you would knit an additional stitch before your increase. In row 15 you do your initial k5 and increase, then do your k1 other than that the rows are the same. It just moves your increase one stitch to the right from row 11.

Hello PlantGoddess, thank you for the information. But I still don’t get it. If I do like in the video where you have bar increase, between the first five and last five sts. I have to increase one st in each st.because on row 10 I had to k2tog in between the five sts on each side. I must go back to 96 sts on my needle. Like on row 11 the k1 isn’t suppose to be the st that you knit in the back of the increase? Otherwise if you knit one stitch without increase, I won’t get to my 96 sts needed. I am lost!

I need further clarifiction. Where exactly does your problem show up? From what you’ve provided, it looks like it’s at the end of Row 15, and if what you’ve provided is all the instructions they’ve given you, then someone has left out another decrease row. Row 10 decreases from 96 to 83; Row 11 increases from 83 back to 96. But Row 15 increases from 96 to 109 unless there’s another decrease row either before or after it.

Is the pattern online where you can provide a link? Or can you scan just that section (careful of copyright laws!) and post it so we can see exactly what they’re telling you?

Hello Spakaloo, thank you so much for trying to help me with this baby afghan, you can view the pattern at www.gallentine.org, once you get to the site, click on knitting and you will see the pattern, the third one on the right. Click on it and you will see the instructions. On row 10 you knit the first 5sts and the last 5sts. So you have 86sts in between that you k2tog. So you are down to 43 plus your 5sts. on each side, so 53 left on row 10. So lets see what you think after seeing the pattern. Thank you so much for helping me. Mireille

It still looks like you would knit row 10 and decrease every stitch which would leave you with 53 stitches. Then in row11 with k5 make an increase in bar between 5th and 6th stitch then k1, make 1 in bar and alternate those 2 stitches across row which should bring you back to your 96 stitches. Then in row 14 you would repeat row 10 and decrease every stitch-back down to 53 stitches. Row 15 you are just shifting your increases over 1 stitch by k5,k1, make bar increase between 6th and 7th stitch, k1,increase 1 across which should bring you back up to 96 stitches again.

I hope that helps.

Thank you very much Plantgoddess, I will be trying it and let you know tomorrow how it went.

Hello Plantgoddess,
I’ve tried it last night and it didn’t worked. Went up to 75 instead of the 96sts. This morning I received an email from Ann Gallantine, I wrote to her last Monday and didn’t think that I would get an answer. But the explanation I received was that “knitting in the bar” is different from the “bar increase”. “Knitting in the bar” is the term for making a decorative increase that results in a small “hole”. To make it, you have to insert you left needle from back to front into the horizontal stand between the stitch you just knitted and the next stitch to be knitted. Knit this new stitch. Further descriptions with illustrations can be found in the following knitting books: Big book of Knitting by Katharina Buss, page 38, knit increase witout twisting. Readers Digest knitter’s handbook, by Montse Stanley, page 110, Pinhole increase-Fig 2.128. Vogue Knitting Quick Reference, page 15, Make One: Version C, and Vogue Knitting ( version 1989, page 39,make One version C.
Still don’t understand her explanation. Thanks to all of you, for trying to help me.

I did an afghan earlier this winter that used the same increase. The thing is that you would do that increase after every stitch that follows your first 5 knit stitches. That would mean 43 increases. The only difference between row 11 and 15 is starting the 1st increase between stitch 5 and 6 or stitch 6 and 7.

There is a video here at KH that shows the increase called for in the pattern. Here is the link.
