British pattern confusion

Hello!
I’m knitting a shrug from a “Wendy” pattern that I got in England. I CO 71 sts.
The 1st row- K1, *P1, K1, rept from * to end.
The 2nd row- P1, * K1, P1, rept from * to end.

Here’s my trouble spot- 3rd row- Increase row-
K1, * rib 2, inc in next st, rept from * to last st, rib 1. 94 sts.

What the heck! Please help me understand this. I ended up with 104 sts instead of 94. I have tried all different ways but haven’t ended up with 94 sts yet. Does the rib 2 mean do the rib sts twice? And how can one do a rib 1 with only one st like it says at the end? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
“Rib 2” means to work 2sts (knit or purl) in the rib pattern. “Rib 1” is knitting or purling one stitch.
When the pattern says to increase in the next stitch it means to work a knit front and back or a knit or purl right loop. Doing this will use up a stitch.
The repeat requires 3 sts and will leave you with 4sts. Row 3 begins with a K1 then starts the repeat p1, k1, increase in the next stitch which is a purl stitch, then k1,p1 increase in the next stitch which is a knit stitch and so on across the row. Don’t worry that you are disrupting the ribbing pattern. The stitch pattern is probably going to change after this row.

The stitch count works out to 94sts if you do it this way.

Thank you so much! I think the translations with a British pattern can be tricky.
