Since I last asked for your help I have succeeded in knitting the front part of my jumper in what I have discovered is Brioche stitch. I am now ready to decrease, I have looked at videos which show clearly how to perform the decrease ,but at the beginning of my row I have a knit stitch, in the videos they don’t seem to begin with this, so what happens to this first stitch when I start to decrease, at the end of the row the last stitch is a pearl stitch so both will form a neat selvedge. thank you.

Not sure if this will be helpful as I’ve never done brioche but I usually put increases and decreases a stitch in from the edge.They don’t interfere with selvedges that way
Jo1855’s suggestion is a good one. It’s essentially what is demonstrated here.

Thank you both, I’ve looked again at the video and now realize that they’re decreasing inside the selvedge edge ! It’s amazing what a difference one stitch makes !
