Break the yarn

Hello, all.
I am not new to Knitting Help, but I am new to posting. I have been knitting socks for over a year now. I have come across a pattern that says to break the yarn. I just completed the cuff and am ready to begin the heel. Why do I need to break the yarn if I’m just going to use the same yarn to keep going for the heel? It looks like my yarn is in the right place for me to start knitting the heel with the WS facing me. Please help. Can I ignore these instructions?

If I do follow the instructions- what do you do with the loose thread? There are no instructions for knotting it or running it through existing stitches. And, I will just join the yarn again in the same place.

Well, it sounds like you can continue with the same working yarn without breaking it off. There aren’t usually instructions for what to do with a yarn tail except perhaps general ones at the end to “weave in all yarn tails”.
Can you give us a link to the pattern or a pattern name?

Here’s the pattern- http://www.canadianliving.com/crafts/knitting/amazing_feets_2.php

Yes, I don’t see why you can’t work with any 20sts for the heel. All the sts have formed a tube thus far.
The reason that the pattern has you break the yarn is so you can work with 10sts from the end of round and 10 from the beginning of round perhaps to straddle the join of rounds.
