Hi, I am making toe up socks and am very confused :?? The pattern is brainless by Marjan Hammink. I have got to heel turn and can’t get it right, I seem to have the wrong number of stitches for the set up row! Could someone help please
Is there an errata i’m missing, or am I just dumb?
According to the pattern, you should have 90sts total for the smallest size. Distribute the sts so that you have the central 26sts on a needle and then 64 other sts. Place a marker on either side of the center 24sts of the 26sts. For the set up row, again for the smallest size, you’re only going to work 23sts and then do a w&t. Don’t worry about the unworked sts on the needle, you’ll get to them later.
Which size are you making? If it’s the smallest size, are the above numbers what you have?

Thanks, I’m making the second size and have 96 stitches, which appears to be correct. I think maybe I’m starting the heel turn from the wrong place  Am I missing something or over thinking it? :whoosh:
I’m using DPN’s I don’t know if that makes a difference.
Ok, 96sts sounds good. What you need to do is locate the upper foot sts and put the center 28sts on a needle.
As for where to start the heel, the pattern says
Position: at end of right gusset, having just worked row 32, stitch 20
and then you start the short rows.
Do you mean you think you’re working the wrong set of stitches for the heel? I’m going cross eyed looking at the pattern but I can tell that the heel stitches are inside the patterned stitches at the edge of the gusset. The stitches to be isolated by markers would be directly opposite the heel stitches. I would mark the center of those stitches and then count half of the total number on each side moving away from the marker and put my markers in. Does that help? Probably not, but I thought I’d give it a try.
I like that the edge stitches of the gusset are patterned. That’s cool.
I think it’s the pattern on the gusset that’s confusing me 'cos the setup row begins with the same pattern edge as the gusset. ie k2tbl, p1, k1tbl, k23, w&t.
This is probably a really silly question, but the heel is up the body of the sock, not across the sock, correct?
I think my head is going to explode, the cuff down socks were not this hard.:hair:
The heel is worked after completing the last row (row 32, stitch 20) of the right gusset. This is a purl st, then start the heel turn sts with a p1, k1tbl k21 according to the directions for the set up row. So on that last round you’ll work the left gusset, the upper sts of the foot, then the right gusset st 20 and finally start the heel turn pattern.
I’m not sure what you mean by up the body and not across the sock but the heel should be on the side opposite the upper foot stitches. Take a look at the photo at the beginning of the pattern and see if you can match up your knitting to the wedge shape in the photo.
So the k2tbl before the p1 in the setup row is a missprint? Thanks for your help i’ll try that now.
The “heel flap” portion will be perpendicular to the foot, the heel turn you’re working on now is the transition from sole to heel flap and corresponds to what you do after making the flap on a top down. Makes sense to me, may not to you.
I’d actually have to work the pattern to be sure but I think you work the pattern sts at the gusset, work across the heel stitches, w&t, work back across the heel sts and w&t before you get to the gusset/patterned sts. Does that address your problem at all?
There are lots of videos on youtube on how to do this short row section and Liat Gatt has a video for “faux heel flap” socks that shows what you’re doing but she doesn’t have any pattern stitches involved.
Next time you do a toe up for the first time, pick a simpler pattern. :roflhard:
I think I’ve got it! :woohoo: I’m now on heel flap and it looks like the correct shape :cheering:
Yes I should have picked an easier pattern for first time toe up, but i’m a glutton for punishment
and they look so pretty.
Thank you both for all your help. ![]()
I’ll probably be back for more before too long
Have a really good easter,
Oh, good, you got it! I’m glad you posted the link, thank you. I think I want to make them too.
Speaking of being a glutton for punishment, I’m trying out Hat Heel Socks. It’s a good pattern but the way it’s put together is confusing and now I have to tink a few rounds.
Glad you have it working. Whenever I see the words brainless or no brainer, I think uh-oh.

It ends up that I’m the brainless part of the equation.
Thank you both for your help, I am now ribbing the cuff :woot: on the first sock. Hopefully the second will be easier.
:yay:
You might want to learn 2@time. That way you immediately apply to the 2nd heel what you did on the first and then you’re done with 'em.
Good Idea once you know what you are doing. But it also means twice as much tinking
Yeah, it can sometimes.
sock number 2 done :woot: really straightforward this time, will post pic soon.
:cheering: :cheering: :cheering:
