Brackets and parentheses

Hello,
I’m a self taught knitter, trying to advance to other projects.
Previously I’ve made hats, scarfs, headbands and cowls.

I have just started an ‘easy’ jumper pattern but stuck on the 10th row.

I have chosen the 4th biggest size so I know that the 3rd number in the brackets/parentheses apply but I can’t understand the instructions.

Also, when I change to 6mm needles after this step, do I slide them from the 5mm or knit them onto the 6mm as per pattern?

Thank you very much for any help. Carrie

Welcome to the forum!
You’re doing a very good thing in moving on to more difficult patterns that stretch your abilities. It’s a great way to learn. Patterns have their own language which is worth diving into to figure out. We’re all happy to help.

For Row 10, Rib 6, work2tog,
(rib 10, work2tog) and repeat the directions in parentheses 6 times total then finish by rib 6.
That should decrease the stitch count by 7sts.
Written out it’s: Row 10, Rib 6, work2tog,
(rib 10, work2tog) (rib 10, work2tog) (rib 10, work2tog) (rib 10, work2tog) (rib 10, work2tog) (rib 10, work2tog), rib 6.

When you knit the “1st row” knit the stitches onto the 6mm needles. That’s the easiest way to effect the change.

Thank you very much for your reply.
It is fantastic to have help and support like I’ve found here.
Thanks for your encouragement too.

Can I just clarify, so that I understand fully (and hopefully for future patterns)

Do I Rib 6, work2tog first and then go onto the rib 10, work2tog x 6?
If not and it is just rib 10, work 2tog x 6, what is the reason for including this information ‘rib 6[6:4:6:5] work2tog’?

Hope that makes sense.

Yes, Rib 6, work 2tog. Then do the (rib 10, work2tog)x6.
This is really a way of distributing the decreases across the row somewhat evenly.

Hello! I just wanted to say welcome! I’ve been knitting for less than a year and I honestly might have given up if it wasn’t for the help I’ve had on here - I’ve made a right menace of myself! I, too have been doing projects that scare me a bit and I’ve learned so much. Looking forward to seeing what you make!
