Booga Bag (again, sorry!) Knitting after picked up stitches

Hello,

Sorry to post another Booga Bag question, but I can’t work out what is going on!

I have picked up my stitches (after getting it wrong once) and now have 100 stitches with my original stitches waiting to be knitting on the left needle of the circular pair, and my yarn on the right needle. When I start to knit it comes out as stockinette stitch rather than garter as it should be.

Have turned something where I shouldnt have? When I picked up the stitches I had the current stiches on the right needle and worked to the left, picking up stitches with the right needle.

Any help much appreciated for a newbie!

First of all … take a deep breath … it’s supposed to turn into stockinette stitch at this stage. When you did the base, you were knitting back and forth, which creates garter stitch when you knit every row. However, now that you’ve picked up all those stitches & joined, you’re going to be knitting every row (round) again, and since you never turn your work, all the knit stitches are going to end up on the outside & the purls will all be on the inside.

Just keep going, and before you know it, you’ll have your Booga bag!!! Oh, and if you’re having trouble joining, you may want to take a look at Amy’s circular knitting videos. Good luck!!!

YAY, brilliant, thanks Julie! So much to learn, but I’ll get there!

Many thanks once again…I’m off to knit now!

DotMom, I posted a similar question somewhere else, not realizing it was here too…I’m at the same point red was, but I’m getting the purls on the outside, stockinette on the inside…any idea what I did wrong?

You should be holding the needles closest to you with cord away from you, so you’re knitting on the outside around and around. You’re probably knitting on the inside of the bag.

Thanks Ingrid, I’m going to attempt it again tomorrow…I’ve given up for the the night after frogging, knitting and frogging again :wall: Not sure why I can’t get this right. I’m back to the original 34 stitches from the 34 rows of garter, so I have to pick up the stitches again and then start the stockinette hopefully

Don’t give you, it will work eventually! I have now finished the bag section and I’m onto the handles.

Thanks for the help again.

Definitely keep plugging away! You’ll get it. And, quite frankly, for this particular pattern, since you’re going to felt it, it wouldn’t really matter if the purls are on the inside our outside. But, for future purposes, you’ll want to learn to knit it the way Ingrid described.

Good luck!!! Make sure post a picture!! You too, Red!

I definitely know what the problem is, and I understand how it should be, it’s just a matter of getting it there…I’m going to attempt again at lunch.
Since I used a different color for the base, the only problem with the purls on the outside was the purl-line where I joined the new color.

Oh, and another question…where I picked up the stitches, the edge is a little raised and set off, is this normal? I tried looking at all the FO’s and I didn’t notice it.

:?? Hmmm … It might be because you were knitting inside out? Did you make sure to pick up the stitches right on the edge? See what it looks like when you start again.

YAY!! :cheering: I figured it out!! Silly me was doing what Ingrid said…I was holding my needles away from me, with the work towards me…whoops! Thanks everyone!

Glad you got it, Kelly!! Good luck!
