Bogus? ForumAdmin email warning of virus alert?

Below is a message that was in my knittinghelp mailbox today. Is this real? It looks fishy to me, I did not recognize the sender and it certainly isn’t one of the Mods here.

DId anyone else receive this?

Important message from the forum administration!

Sincerely, Forum Administration www.knittinghelp.com.

Probably some sort of spam or malware. Just delete it; neither we nor Sheldon send out any kind of stuff like this.

Hi—I just received an email notifying me of a private messege here.
It starts off Dear(s) and list me and 4 other people.

Now when I logged on (I haven’t been here in about a month)
I saw the private message, opened it and it asked for a reading confirmation (which I canceled); the avatar on the left is some
cartoon female called Lady Admin, with no previous posts and joined this month.
I doing my own virus scan with my own software.
This doesn’t seem right at all.

Yes, it’s bogus, please delete it. We’ll work on clearing this up.

Thank you!

Thanks, I just got this in my email and logged in and it was no longer in my email box, so thanks!

Yeah, I got hold of Sheldon and he deleted them and banned the user. He’s going to upgrade the forum to prevent this kind of thing in the future.

Hi,

I have just made some changes to the forum tonight which should hopefully put a stop to this sort of PM spam. This is the 3rd instance of PM spam that we have seen this month. Typically, we only say this sort of thing happen maybe once a year, if that.

Thanks for your patience while we figured out a way to stop them. Hopefully this will be the end of it. :cheering:

in case you need to know… i just got one too.

Thanks for posting. It’s not necessary for us to know who got the message. We know the PM spammer sent to a bunch of folks and I told the forum to delete all the PMs sent by the spammer. So many members might have received an email notice, but no PM when they logged in. I have implemented a bunch of changes to our PM and Posting system which should hopefully put the spammers out of a job on KH.

Thanks.
Sorry for posting, usually I ignore span but this one looked so “official” and I wasn’t sure who to let knoe about it.

No need to be sorry. Better to play it safe if something looks suspicious. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the changes I implemented last night keep the spammers at bay.
