Hi again. Just got to chart A2 AND I AM COMPLETELY LOST! All of a sudden I feel like I’m reading a foreign language and it’s one I don’t know. It says from RS work A2 as follows 6 sts in garter work A2A 1 time, repeat A2B 5 times then A2C 1time finish with 6 sts in garter stContinue with A.H2 and 6 sts in garter st in each side. READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING SECTION BEFORE CONTINUING.
When A.2 has been worked 1 time vertically (piece measures approx. 33-35-38 cm / 13”-13¾”-15”), work 1 ridge over all sts (= 2 rows K).
Then work A.1 with 1 edge st in garter st in each side (beg with 1st row in A.1) - AT THE SAME TIME dec 4-3-3 sts evenly on every K row from RS - READ DECREASE TIP - 7-9-11 times in total.
On next row from RS, dec 2-5-1 sts evenly = 81-93-105 sts on row, K 1 row from WS (24-30-36 rows A.1 in total after A.2).
Piece measures approx. 43-48-53 cm / 17”-19”-21”.
Continue with A.3 as follows: 1 edge st in garter st, work A.3 a total of 13-15-17 times in width, finish with 1st st in A.3 and 1 edge st in garter st.
Continue with A.3 and 1 edge st in each side.
When A.3 has been worked 1 time vertically (piece measures approx. 47-52-57 cm / 18½”-20½”-22½”), work 1 ridge over all sts (= 2 rows K).
Then work A.1 with 1 edge st in garter st in each side until finished measurements (beg with 1st row in A.1) - AT THE SAME TIME dec 5 sts evenly on every K row from RS 7-9-12 times in total.
On next row from RS, dec 7-7-0 sts evenly = 39-41-45 sts on row, K 1 row from WS (24-30-36 rows A.1 in total after A.3).
I don’t understand it at all! Can anyone look at this and give me some understanding of what I’m supposed to do? Like how do I do 6sts in garter in each side or how do I work 1 ridge over all sts. Or work 1 edge st in garter st in ea side then it says at same time dec 4 st evenly on every k row from RS , and what does it mean when it says dec 2sts evenly.
Thank you
What are you making? Can you link to your pattern?
Reading your post, you should have 6 sts on each end of the needle that you will knit before and then after you do your charts. work 1 ridge over all sts (= 2 rows K). If it’s on the needle, knit it then turn and knit another row.
Edge sts in garter will be knitted on both sides (This is wrong: one side and purled on the other.) Has your pattern been having you work edge sts already? If so, then just continue as before.
Decrease evenly means to space your decreases evenly across the row. Divide the number of sts by the number of decreases and you get a number that will allow fairly even distribution of decreases. Depending on what you’re doing, the dec 2 evenly could be one dec on each end of the row.
ETA I’m sorry, I realized I’d made a real boo boo up there.
Here’s the pattern link
I’m still a little fuzzy on the work one ridge overall sts. I think you are saying for me to k the next row…correct
Please see the correction I made in the previous post. If I’ve made another error, someone will catch it.
A garter ridge is formed when you knit two rows.
GARTER ST:
Back and forth on needle: K all rows. 1 ridge = 2 rows K.
Some words get lost in the Drops translation. When the pattern says “on each side”, it really should be “at each edge”. The 6sts in garter are going to make a border of 6sts at each edge which are knit on all rows. Put in 2 markers to remind yourself to knit these sts if that helps.
As GG mentioned, decrease evenly means to distribute the decreases across the row. The pattern doesn’t want all the decreases in one place. Since this is worked back and forth on the needles, I divide the number of sts by the number of decreases plus one. So if the pattern says to dec 4 sts. divide the stitch number by 5 (you have about 111sts/5 so dec about every 22sts) and that will space out the decreases. If you’re one or two sts off it won’t matter.
Thanks so much! I am always amazed at how much you guys know about knitting. Thanks again
